Contest Winner Rob Saraniero with wife Mel

These are the results of the contest to pick the winners of the 2006 Bull Run Run. Congratulations to overall winner Rob Saraniero. He was followed by Bryon Powell and Derrick Carr. The rankings and how each contestant picked the runners are below. You will note that one big drop out hurt several contestants. The rules are below.

Bryon was last year's champion. That is first and second in two years. Pretty impressive.

Rules for the Contest

Contestants had to pick:

• Top five finishers overall (could include a woman)
• Top three female finishers (could include women of any age)
• Top male runner over 49 years old (could include a male over 60)
• Top female runner over 49 years old (could include a female over 60)
• Time in hours and minutes of the first runner across the finish line.

You will note that some of the categories were slightly different from the age groups used for awards in the race itself. One runner could be in more than one category. For example if the first woman gets fourth overall and is 51 years old, you would need to have picked that women for fourth overall, first woman, and first master woman to maximize your result.

Scoring

The winner was the person with the fewest points. Entrants received points as follows:

• For each runner picked, one point for the difference between actual place and picked place. If your winner gets second, that's one point. If your second pick gets first, that's one point. If your third person drops out, that is the number of finishers plus one, minus three. (This means you may want to think twice about picking the kind of runner who drops out when he sees he can't win.)
• One point for each minute off of the predicted winning time. The actual winning time is rounded down. So if the winner finishes in 6:34:59 and you picked 6:34, you get no points. If you picked 6:35, you get one point. Life is unfair.
• One point is substracted for each winner you pick exactly right. So if you pick overall, female, male masters, and female masters dead on, you get four points taken off. (A perfect score would be -4.)

The winner's time breaks ties. If that does not work, then we will go to most correct picks. If that doesn't work, we will flip a coin.
