American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund
Dear Sirs and Madams:
The Virginia Happy Trails Running Club sponsors a trail run for women each September in northern Virginia. This year's event was held on September 15.
Our event, like everything else in the United States, was greatly effected by the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. After discussing the situation among ourselves, we decided that we should not cancel our event. We held the event, and it was very successful.
At our run, we gave people an opportunity to donate to the American Red Cross as well as providing some help from our club funds. The total raised is $1378, broken down as follows:
1. Thirteen checks from donors made payable to the American Red Cross. (Some did not add "Disaster Relief" but that was the intended destination of all of these donations.) These checks total $1055.
2. A check from the Virginia Happy Trails Running Club for $323. This represents $183 in cash donations we received, and $140 in entry fees for people who could not come to the event and asked that their entry fees be donated to the Red Cross. Normally, we do not refund entry fees. Some of the cash donations represented "payments" for extra t-shirts we sell of participants in the event. We donated all of the proceeds from these sales to the Red Cross.
We hope that these donations will help you in your good work. We know that there is much to be done and wish you god speed in your efforts.
Very truly yours,
