Blue Mountain Ridge Run

Distance: 20 Miles
Saturday, August 9, 2014

Meeting Place: Dave's House (665 Fire Trail Rd. Linden, VA 22642)
Start Time:
7:30 am

This will be about a 20 mile ridge top run through the G.R. Thompson WMA and Sky Meadows State Park.  All of the run can be found on PATC Map 8.  A big portion of the run will be on the AT.  I would rate this run as moderately difficult due to the rocks, roots, and elevation change (3,600 feet of climbing).  I will provide photo copied maps for anyone who would like one at the start of the run.  I plan on running together and will re-group together if necessary at important points on the route.  This is not a good training run for someone who has not completed a long training run in the past!  But if you ever wanted to train in the mountains this is your chance.  There are options to cut the run short if needed. You should plan on bringing enough water/fuel to get you through 4.5 - 5.5 hours of running.  There will be some aid/water available around mile 9 to top off bottles/hydration packs.Blue Mountain in Linden is approximately 65 miles from DC and just 40 miles from Manassas.  The run will take place only 7.5 miles from the Famous Apple House in Linden. There will be plenty of parking between my house and parking lot 9 in the WMA.Address/directions:  665 Fire Trail Rd. Linden, VA 22642  -  From the east:  take I66 west to exit 18 Markham (Route 688).  Turn left at exit and then right on (Route 55) John Marshall Highway.  Travel approximately 4 miles to right turn on Freezeland Rd. (Route 638) just past the Linden Post Office on the right.  Take Freezeland Rd. up approximately 6 miles to the top of Blue Mountain passing several cell towers near the top.  At 5.9 - 6.0 miles bear slightly right on to gravel Fire Trail Road by a parking area with a bank of mailboxes.  Drive slowly .6 miles down Fire Trail Rd.  My house is on the left - Green Colonial with black shutters.  Park in around the circle if possible.  There is overflow parking across the road at one of the WMA parking areas.
