Blue Mountain Ridge Run 2013
Meet at: Dave Herring's House - Linden, VA
This will be about a 21 mile ridge top run through the G.R. Thompson WMA and Sky Meadows State Park. All of the run can be found on PATC Map 8. A big portion of the run will be on the AT. I would rate this run as moderately difficult due to the rocks, roots , and elevation change. This is the perfect training run to set you up for success for your fall racing schedule. I will provide photo copied maps for anyone who would like one at the start of the run. This is not a good training run for someone who has not completed a long training run in the past! But if you ever wanted to train in the mountains this is your chance.
You should plan on bringing enough water/fuel to get you through 4.5 - 5.5 hours of running. There will be some water available around mile 9 to top off bottles/hydration packs.
Blue Mountain in Linden is approximately 65 miles from DC and just 40 miles from Manassas. The run will take place only 7.5 miles from the Famous Apple House in Linden. There will be plenty of parking between my house and parking lot 9 in the WMA. The address is 665 Fire Trail Rd. Linden, VA 22642. Please be wary of GPS directions as I have had some cases of older GPS units trying to bring people up the back side of the mountain from which there is no access.
Address/Directions: 665 Fire Trail Road Linden, VA 22642 - From points east take I66 west to exit 18 (Markham). Take a left on Leeds Manor at the bottom of the exit ramp. Take a right on route 55 John Marshall Highway. After approximately 5 miles take a right on route 638 Freezeland Rd. directly after the Linden PO on your right. Travel up Freezeland Rd. 5.9 miles when at the top veer slightly to the right onto Fire Trail Rd. (At this critical point there will be a gravel parking area to your right including a bank on mailboxes. DO NOT continue to the left on Blue Mountain Rd.) Once on the gravel proceed down Fire Trail Rd. go approximately .6 miles to my house on the left. (Green Colonial with black shutters). Park around the horseshoe driveway or across the road at the WMA parking area #9.
