Kurisky and Speidel Lead VHTRC Finishers at Masochist 50 Miler

Jack Kurisky was the first VHTRC finisher, and Sophie Speidel was first VHTRC woman at the Mountain Masochist 50 Miler on Saturday November 5.  MMTR is also the final event in the Lynchburg Ultra Series.  After 4 races and nearly 145 miles, Sophie Speidel won the women's LUS by just over 1 minute.  Martha Wright was the LUS women's master's winner, and also the MMTR grand master's winner.

The MMTR 50 is now under the care and feeding of Clark Zealand, but race founder David Horton is still very much a presence at the event.  This likely was the last running on the original course, as permit issues apparently will require changes for the 30th MMTR in 2012.

A Snowy Halloweeny

Reports and photos from this past weekend's Halloweeny 50 km up in the Harpers Ferry area have been rolling in.  As one of the 49 runners who did show to run in the wet and the snow (and amongst the falling tree limbs), I can't say enough about what a great job event directors' Sharon and Ted Lapkoff and their fantastic group of volunteers did.  They really embraced the challenging conditions, and made the event a great deal of fun.
