Hinton and Petrie top VHTRC field in Capon Valley 50k

Saturday, May 20, was a beautiful day to race on the trails in the Capon Valley of West Virginia, just across the Virginia border from Winchester and Strasburg.  Brad Hinton (aka trail running's Susan Lucci) was the top VHTRC runner, and, as is often the case with Brad, second overall with a great time of 4:14.  First VHTRC woman, and women's master's winner, was Ragan Petrie in 4:39.  Many more club members finished amongst the field of roughly 200 in this popular 50k, which has been aptly dubbed the "MMT Volunteers" race.

Great Weekend at MMT 100

Eva Pastalkova lowered her own event record by almost a half hour to be the top woman at the 2012 Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 mile run held in the mountains of the same name on the weekend of May 12-13.  Jason Lantz won the male race.  Jack Pilla broke the senior record in Beamon-like fashion. Trail Work Party

Group at Work PartyThirty people participated in the annual VHTRC trail work party on May 5.  The group worked on trails in the Massanutten Mountains, primarily in the Gap Creek/Scothorn Gap area.  We particularly appreciate the help of PATC district overseer Ed Brimburg.  Thanks to all who worked!

Wet and wild weather at Promise Land 50K+

Neal Gorman and Ragan Petrie were the first VHTRC male and female finishers at the Promise Land 50K+. Neal was fifth male in 4:52 and Ragan was fourth female in 5:57. Marty Lindemann was the first Grand Masters female and Gary Knipling was the first Super Masters male finisher. Conditions at the start were ripe for PRs with cloudy skies and temps in the 40s, but five hours later cold sleet, torrential rains, and close lightning strikes made for an "epic" day on the trails around Apple Orchard Falls west of Bedford, VA.
