Jack Kurisky finishes the tough Plain 100

Jack Kurisky continued his strong year of racing with a successful finish at the very tough Plain 100 out in Washington state.  The course is closer to 110 miles in length, with roughly 26,000 feet of elevation gain - and one aid station. Runners are otherwise required to carry what they need, and obtain water from natural sources on the course. Jack finished in a time of 34:46. This year's race results are not yet posted, but here is the website.

VHTRC Board Elections

The terms of office of the members of the current VHTRC board expire on December 31.  Three of the five members are not running for reelection.  We need qualified people to step forward to lead the club.

Holdaways, Baker finish Wastach 100

The father-son duo of Jeff and Chris Holdaway finished the Wasatch Front 100 last weekend in 34:46. About ten minutes later, in 34:55, Matt Baker also finished. Wasatch is the final race of the Grand Slam and is considered one of the toughest U.S 100s because of its altitude, elevation gain, and dramatic weather changes. Results

2013 Women's Half Marathon

More than 200 women finished the 21st annual VHTRC Women’s Half Marathon, enjoying nearly perfect early Fall weather. Finishing in 1:33:33, Martha Nelson defended her title and beat her old course record by more than four minutes. Results.

Neal Gorman runs a FKT on TWOT

Neal reported on his blog that he set a Fastest Known Time (FKT) on The Wild Oak Trail (TWOT). Neal ran the 26-mile, 7,000+ feet of climb loop counter-clockwise and finished on the road to the trail parking lot in 4:21:19. David Frazier apparently still holds the FKT of a CCW run with a start and finish on the trail at the trailhead in 4:22:xx, which broke Mike Morton's then-FKT of 4:23:xx. The TWOT loop has been changed slightly in the past year, so these FKTs are relative...and impressive!

Bob Gaylord finishes Haliburton Forest 100

With crew and pacing support from his groupies, aka "Team Gaylord,"  Bob Gaylord finished the Haliburton Forest 100 in Canada last weekend. Haliburton is one of the Old School 100s, celebrating its 20th year in 2013. Results are hard to find on the HF website, but should be here: Results

VHTRC Women Dominate Odyssey Races

On a bluebird late summer day at Douthat State Park, the Blue Train women represented the club in fine fashion with podium finishes in the Odyssey Trail Marathon and 40 miler. Sophie Speidel and Stephanie Wilson went 2-3 in the 40 miler, and Gaby Gorman set the female course record in the marathon with a time of 4:11. The Odyssey races include a 5- miler, half-marathon, marathon, and 40 option; each 13.2 mile loop has over 2800 feet of climb on spectacular singletrack. Results.

Carnage at The Ring

There were a number of big stories at this year's running of The Ring in the Massanutten Mountains, held as per tradition on Labor Day weekend. The course has never been tougher, with the runners encountering not just the usual rocks, but also heat, humidity, spider webs, flying and biting insects, and overgrowth in abundance from this wet summer. It was a fair challenge for the 43 starters, a challenge that only 47% were able to complete this year.

Congratulations to Danny Mowers, who for the second year in a row ran away from the rest of a strong field with an overall win at The Ring.  This year Danny finished in a time of 16:03, which was very impressive under the conditions.

What a year of running and racing its been-- and it's only September!

The VHTRC recognizes outstanding performances and improvements by our members each year at the annual club Awards Party, which will be held in Jan/Feb 2014, date TBD. Members are asked to nominate their peers for these awards, and in an attempt to keep the year's performances at the forefront of your mind ( before College Bowl season totally zaps it), here is a partial list of the highlights of the year thus far. If you would like to nominate someone and he/she is not on this list, make sure you send it in when we call for nominations in December! (Note: in order to be eligible for VHTRC Awards, one must have been a member for the entire year covered by the award).
