Great Wx for 2013 QSQB

QSQB sticker

A small but determined field toed the line this past Saturday for what has become an annual mid-atlantic trail journey through 4 states.  Three were actually able to make it through all 4 states: Matt Smythe, Fred Fialco and Jeff Gura; the rest enjoyed a Hortonesque 50k on a bluebird fall day.

A huge thanks to the volunteers Tom Simonds, Jeff Radan, Caren Jew and Dan Mowers for helping make it all happen.

Mike Bur and Keith Knipling DNF at Big Dog Backyard Ultra

Keith and Mike at Backyard UltraLast weekend Mike Bur and Keith Knipling traveled to Bell Buckle, TN, to run in Lazarus Lake’s Big Dog Backyard Ultra. The race consists of a 4.1667 mile loop that is repeated every hour on the hour.

25 miles in 6 hours, 50 miles in 12 hours, 100 miles in 24…

This continues until only one person remains, who is the lone finisher. The race started at 7 am on Saturday. For the first 12 hours the route is on a singletrack trail through Laz’s property, somewhat reminiscent of the Bull Run Run/Women’s Half Marathon Do Loop. At night (the second 12 hours) the route switches to an out-and-back paved road. (Laz added this road section to make the run “easier,” since many runners got lost on the trail at night.) After 50 miles of that, the run returns to the trail.

VHTRC Takes On The Trilogy

While many eyes were focused on the record numbers attempting Hot TWOT last weekend, another merry band of VHTRC runners were romping through the rain and mud across the mountains in West Virginia at the WVMTR's Trilogy. Eva Pastalkova appears to have finished as first female, and Michele Harmon was third. Joe Clapper and Mark McKennett also finished the 50k, 50 miler, and Half Marathon in the three- day event. Finishers at HOT TWOT!

TWOT runners intending to run four loopsThe Hot TWOT 100 had an unprecedently large field, with 17 starters on Friday October 11. Here is a picture of the Friday starters who intended to do four loops.  Not surprisingly, not all made it!  Click the Read more to see a bigger version of the photo.  Four runners finished all four loops - Nick Combs, Katie Keier, Dave Quivey and Mike Bur.  17 additional runners came out to run on Saturday, with Dave Frazier leading a strong field of single-loopers with a course record time of 4:14. More details to come soon! Website | Photos

Robin Watkins is second at Double Ironman

2013 MMT women's champ Robin Watkins finished the USA Ultra Double Ironman triathlon (" Double Anvil Ironman" in Tri-speak) at rainy Lake Anna State Park on Saturday in 28:51. This is a 4 mile swim, 224 mile bike and 52 mile (pavement) run. Aaron Schwartsbard reports that Robin set the women's bike split record. Robin joins the illustrious list of other VHTRC women who have excelled at the ultra ironman distance, including Susan Baehre, Linda Gaudette, and Christine Couldrey, who is attempting a quintuple Anvil finish and for whom Aaron is crewing.
